TEETH DREAMS
King Reild
OCTOBER 2017
by KING RELD Featuring work by Dave Watt, Elaine Healy, Aiden Dinardo, Keaton Manning, music by A Low Rose Trellis.
TEETH DREAMS explores grotesque motifs of self-image and confronts how the notions of luxury, beauty, and gluttony often play into the subconscious realm. Teeth dreams, for those of us who have had them, are monstrous and visceral entrapments. They embody our repulsions of rot and they crumble as death and loss in one's life appear. Teeth have long been an appraisal of one's worth or beauty, even an inherent part of a human’s survival. Objectively, our teeth are like gemstones, lucky rocks, or, most similarly, like pearls.
All of a sudden, strings of pearls began to grow from my pink gums. I could feel each pearl string itself to the next and emerge from my. gingival membrane. It doesn’t hurt but this mirror tells me otherwise. The persistent tooth-pearls become long strings of wealth, but am I still pretty?
A mirror can be both a dangerous and wondrous place for our self-image and our ego. The wearables in TEETH DREAMS are exaggerations of the human body. Models wear grills on their teeth made with pearls and tusks, the same organic matter as their hidden teeth. Do you hide parts of your outer self that you do not believe are beautiful? When you look in the mirror do you try to adjust your face? When do the exaggerations of our best features become mutant? TEETH DREAMS portrays everyday feelings of powerlessness, petty contempt, and personal insecurities that are magnified, blown up to absurd proportions, and distorted beyond recognition. We become not what we appear, but what we are in the truest sense.
Large screen printed mirrors of collaborative works by Dave Watt line the walls of the main gallery. These digital collages are people modeling the KING RELD jewelry that is presented in cases alongside each 2-D work. Thick fog and blue lighting tickles models in the center of the room reclining on antique furniture for sale from Mahla & Co. Antiques. The models are wearing opulent gowns and wearables made by designers Elaine Healy and Aiden Dinardo to showcase the monstrous teeth grills that KING RELD has made custom for each model. Surreal video installations by Keaton Manning and KING RELD feature the grills and Greek mythology in the smaller gallery alongside a sculpture based on the pomegranate seeds that Persephone ate while visiting the underworld, illuminating that half of life is spent asleep and dreaming. The opening will be accompanied with music by A Low Rose Trellis.
