Photonic Beings
Arantxa Araujo
MARCH 2017
Photonic Beings, a project investigating light as a tool for self-reflection, contemplation, and its effects on perception. Araujo invites viewers to be fully immersed in a virtual-reality-like installation where human movement is presented via LED light. Araujo is interested in the relationship of sight with having a vision and our ability to recognize that vision. Without vision our actions are mere impulses, but with it they become creative acts in pursuit of a purpose.
Araujo braids the scientific perspective with psychology and the chakra system. The artist focuses on the role of the eye and the brain's interpretation of a specific wavelength that results in the color blue. Shades of indigo are thought to develop and balance the sixth chakra which is responsible for intuition. The cube structure allows images to appear as holograms which submerge the observer in an out-of-body experience, where one becomes the doer and the observer. From technology to spirituality, we are creatures of light. In the study of perception, Araujo plans to present the premiere of we are light, a new performance about the eye and perception, both as a physical and psychological process. In the durational performance Araujo is suspended in the air holding a lit candle, which serves as a reminder of where we are in space, as well as the common light that we share in our journey of life.
