Zhiwan Cheung

FEBRUARY 2017
Picture
Show Statement:
Colorbound, a solo exhibition by Zhiwan Cheung explores the superficial application of language onto an ethnic neighborhood, an idealized skin color, and a series of decontextualized words, Colorbound seeks out the complexities and contradictions of naming through sculpture and video.

Artist Bio:
Zhiwan Cheung (b. Long Beach, CA) received his BFA from Cornell University and his MFA from Carnegie Mellon University. Zhiwan probes the intersection of national identity and the personal psyche, focusing on how and where they join and diverge. Through sculpture, film, and performance, this journey is guided by an allusive visual language, with references spanning from pop culture to art history that guide audiences into finding their own rites of passage.

Zhiwan has exhibited work both nationally and internationally in venues such as NURTUREart Gallery in New York, Shoshana Wayne Gallery In Los Angeles, Pica Piac Gallery in Berlin, and The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. Currently, Zhiwan lives and works in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
