CURDLED:   11.1.13

11/12/2013

A diverse group of local artists took possession of the BUNKER site for the evening to create a haunted house hybrid, where UNBLURRED arts crawlers were asked to explore the entire project space and encounter the happenings therein.

In the main gallery, dancers Laura Stokes and Patty Petronella performed "Contained," a post-modern movement routine co-choreographed by Stokes and Ella Mason, of Fieldwork Dance Project. Accompanying on cello and drums, Eric Weidenhof and Brad Podolski of Ambeyonce, set a live soundscape that heightened contrast between moments of calm versus chaos in the dancers movement.

An interactive sound work by Josh Benson invited viewers to play a set of wall-mounted chimes by interfacing with an Iphone. Like a novelty organ from a mall kiosk, the chimes moved robotically, affecting a ghostly quality (in a D-minor scale no less).

Video artist Chris Johns (aka glogman) exhibited a new series of drawings created using MS paint. The drawings, various scenes interpreted from the Lord's Prayer, featured a mix of explicitly Christian iconography and more idiosyncratic musings. Johns' total installation incorporated a projection of a recent video piece and an overturned, face-up TV ("a digital ouija board") playing live footage recorded by a video camera positioned in the room.

Artists Erin Womack and Scott Andrew held a cyber seance channeling spirits
Veronica Bleaux and Mikey McParlane live from Chicago by way of astral/digital projection. With dripping blood, burning candles, and a thick mist (which eventually seeped throughout the house) Womack and Andrew converted the space into a eerie enclave for mystical tripping.

Pittsburgh band Blød Maud performed in the gallery as well. Lead singer Emily Crossen, wearing a plastic mannequin hand as a sculptural epaulet, wailed through sprays of dust as the sound vibrations shook debris loose from the ductwork overhead.

CURDLED closed with a performance by Mike Kasunic: heavy bass, hypnotic strobe, and fog. You should have been there.
